Spitfire had worried about how Acid was coping back at the apartment. But now at the precinct, sitting in a cold interview room and sipping an insipid cup of coffee Anderson had got for him, he was less worried and more irate.

This was on her. All of it. She was a bloody nuisance.

Kowalski asked him again what had happened, and he relayed the events as close to how he remembered telling them in the police car earlier. There were a few moments where Kowalski stopped writing and looked at him from under hooded eyelids, but Spitfire read his manner as exasperation rather than suspicion. Still, that didn’t stop the bad-tempered old cop from going through every single aspect of the process by the book and keeping him there much longer than had been suggested in the car. Maybe he was a thorough kind of guy. Maybe he was just close to finishing his shift and wanted to run down the clock back at the precinct rather than out on the streets.

Once the report was complete, Spitfire signed it as Dr Charles Summers. He was given a number he could call in a few days to see if there had been any developments, but was told not to get his hopes up. Finally, Kowalski showed him to the door and told him, “Be careful out there.” It was the sort of hackneyed thing a cop in a soap opera might say, and Kowalski probably didn’t buy the sentiment any more than Spitfire did. But it was clear the old cop was done with the weird British doctor who didn’t seem to want to help himself. And thank god for that. Spitfire hadn’t been inside a police station since he was eighteen, and he was eager to get the hell out of there.

The sun was coming up as he stepped out onto the street. It was a cold and frosty morning, but the icy chill in the air was refreshing after being cooped up in an interview room for the last two hours. As he walked down to the corner where a line of taxis were parked outside a hotel, he felt that same hollow feeling in his soul that he often got when he hadn’t slept. Whether he’d be able to catch up on his sleep anytime soon was debatable. He had to find the damn mark and end this debacle once and for all. It should never have got to this point.

Once more, he found himself cursing Caesar for sending Acid Vanilla along for the ride. Blondie might have complicated matters, but it was her alone that had got him into this ridiculous mess. If it wasn’t for her, Spitfire would have eradicated Bakov on the first day. He’d be back in Blighty with his feet up by now.

He crossed the street and yanked open the back door of the first taxi in line, telling the Hispanic driver the address as he climbed in. There was a lot to process
